Reimagining the Education System – The Effect Reading Exponentially Faster Has on the Productivity and Achievements of a Group of Students

During the introduction session of the course I share a section I call “Implications for Humanity”. The results we obtain on the Shilin Speed Reading Program are more unique and consistent than any other speed reading course being offered in the market in the world today. If our theories and methodology hold true what are the possible implications for society if our course reaches more people? A case study I use to demonstrate the potential of this is a group of students from WITS University I worked with in 2016. They were encouraged by their lecturer to seek a speed reading course and Jimmy Yuan one of the students found our website. One of the most startling feedbacks that came from the group was that from Kevin Li a first year accounting student from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Kevin increased his reading speed from around 200 words per minute to over 4000 words per minute during the three-week course.

On the 3 rd week of the course Kevin shared with me an experience he had as a result of attending the course. In 12th grade a year earlier Kevin mentioned that his assigned English literature course setwork book for the year was the “Great Gatsby”. Kevin went onto share that he did not complete the Great Gatsby in his grade 12 year. He managed to past grade 12 and managed to gain University exemption and get into Accounting at WITS, but he did not finish the great Gatsby. On the third week of the course Kevin decided to test his reading improvements and pulled out the Great Gatsby and managed to finish the entire book in just 45 minutes. A book prescribed by the Education Department of South Africa for students to be completed in an entire year… completed in 45 minutes…

The other success story in the group was that of Tshepiso Tsotetsi. Half-way through the course Tsephiso first realised a changed had taken place when he was able to finish Yuval Noah Harari’s book Sapiens in just a day. A book he had been reading for 4 weeks and only completing 100 pages.

He went onto completing the course with the highest reading speed in the group. I found out a few years later from one of Tsephiso’s classmates that he became one of the top Actuarial Science students at University just a year after completing the course. I have a firm belief that a basic undergraduate degree should not take longer than a year for an individual to complete. I shared this belief with the group before we started the course. They first looked at me like I was a little crazy, but their enthusiasm, diligence and discipline to practice what I was teaching gave me the opportunity the change their beliefs on what they were really capable of.
